Roasted turtle dinners are back on the menu at the Dorf Haus Supper Club, Roxbury, near Sauk City, for a short run, during lent. Although haddock fish fry dinners remain the big catch, turtle is snapping up attention on Wednesday and Friday nights from Feb. 28 through April 10.
Shell out $18.95 for the entrée which includes turtle, marinated overnight in carrots and onions and then roasted for four hours. It is served with mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw and the Dorf Haus signature fritters. The Dorf Haus popular Friday night haddock fish fry with fritters is also a special on Wednesdays, as well as Fridays, during lent. Cost is $14.95.
Serving turtle became so popular on Fridays during Lent that, two years ago, the Dorf Haus started offering it on Wednesday nights and also added the Friday night l fish fry special to the Wednesday choices, according to Rebecca Maier-Frey, co-owner of the second-generation family-owned Dorf Haus.
The turtle tradition started 36 years ago when the late Vern Maier, original Dorf Haus owner, thought his loyal customers, many of whom were Catholics, would like to try something different, other than fish during lent and turtle qualified.
Many Dorf Haus diners come from a 60- mile radius and the Dorf Haus does not want to disappoint by being “out of turtle”, Maier-Frey said, so she suggests diners call ahead to reserve turtle at 608-643-3980.
