WI German Newspapers Presentation

Between the 1840s and the 1950s, more than 250 newspapers such as Sauk Prairie's Pioneer Press in the state of Wisconsin were published in German – by far more than in any other foreign-language. Established by German immigrants, who settled in this area between 1845 and 1893, these publications show that this group of immigrants not only brought their language, cuisine, and customs but also their print culture to their new home. They filled their newspapers with stories covering their interests, the life they had left behind, and the history and culture of Wisconsin. The history of the German-language press is not merely the history of German immigration to this state but a history of how a patchwork of immigrant communities came to share an identity as Wisconsinites.
